Will The Microsoft Kinect Be Successful?

Since the Kinect peripheral was first advertised for Xbox

, it has started a lot of controversy over the internet. However, some gaming enthusiasts are worried that this upcoming peripheral is going to be a waste of money. I will explain some of the concerns that people have for this gaming platform.

One thing people often worry about is if Kinect will be too slow or not. For Kinect to be enjoyed, it will need to be fast and responsive. The peripheral is dependent entirely on body movement. The player's movements are going to have to be picked up pretty much exactly when they are performed for the games to be fun. Nearly all fans know there will be a bit of drag at the time of release. After some patches are applied, the responsiveness should increase though.

Gamers are praying that the voice recognition of the Kinect will be high-tech enough. Unfortunately, some previews of Kinect games in action have demonstrated that it doesn't do all that well with reading peoples' speech correctly. And will the system be able to easily read different people's accents? This could potentially be an issue since everyone knows that dialects can differ considerably around the world.

I actually think that it will depend on the game programmers. They might have the biggest say in how advanced the voice recognition system is from game to game. When the Kinect is released, then we will find out the answers to these questions about the voice implementation.

One question on several players minds is will there be games that are meant for the more hardcore gamers? Not many shooting or war games have been advertised at this time, while many kids games have. The Kinect might not have any appeal to older players in this case. The majority of gamers just aren't going to purchase Kinect if they don't feel they will be entertained by the games. Hopefully companies will announce games for the hardcore crowd sometime in the near future. If this doesn't occur, then Kinect probably won't be very profitable.
