Will You Thrive Or Dive As An Effective Leader In The Next Decade?
Leadership is an incredibly fickle subject
Leadership is an incredibly fickle subject. It is as hard to pin down a definition for the subject, as it is to develop an effective leadership style. However, will this hinder us in creating a 'leadership forecast' over the coming decade? I don't think so.
As we entered the decade, several strong leaders had emerged in popular media, these included:
*United States President Barrack Obama,
*Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs, and
*Legendary investor Warren Buffet.
*Environmental Campaigner Bob Geldof
*Ex-South African President Nelson Mandela
And many others.
As well as specifically named leaders, will others fare just as well during 2010-2020 as they did during the 'noughties'?.
No they won't according to several key leadership gurus speaking recently at the UK national leadership conference. The coming decade will be one of the first where the technology curve will become so steep that being able to keep up with the changing world will become extremely challenging, never mind looking ahead, or better - directing change.
Commonly referred to as 'Moore's Law', I am referring to the observation made by late Intel Co-founder Gordon E. Moore, where he stated that the speed of the computer processor has doubled every two years since 1958. This level of change was not as noticeable in the 20th Century, as computers player a 'supporting' role in the economy. However, as computers now control or directly support massive parts of the global economy, the sheer exponential shift in the speed of technology is really being felt.
You may have heard statistics such as '50% of Children born today will be working in jobs that don't even exist today' in the news. These sorts of figures clearly show how the rapid pace at which the economy now develops means that if you stay still for 3 years, you could be quickly out of business.
A quick look at the high growth companies in today's world: Google, Facebook, Amazon shows a plethora of companies that are constantly innovating or acquiring new ideas to keep moving forwards. Google alone develops hundreds, yes, hundreds of beta products each year. This was a company that was founded just 12 years ago!
There are some leadership skills that will always be relevant, and there will be some that will become obsolete. Among the permanent group are charisma, effective strategy, time management and strong ethics. Some of the fashionable skills include being able to 'build communities', or any skills related to a specific type of work culture.
In conclusion, I believe that the ability for a leader to survive in the coming decade will depend on what type of leadership skills they current have, and which ones they are willing to develop to be able to stay ahead of the curve. I believe that the market will quickly come into play, and ineffective or static leaders will be swiftly removed if people realise that they have not adapted sufficiently.
