Wimax Technology Provides City Wide Internet Access
WiMAX, which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a telecoms
standard which meets the needs of next generation data networks (4G networks). The technology provides wireless internet access at broadband speeds. Networks are being deployed world-wide, including in many major US cities.
Currently most computer users can access the internet at high speed from their home if they have a cable or DSL connection to their Internet Service Provider, but if they are away from home their laptop can only connect at WiFi hot spots such as in restaurants, hotels or in libraries.
With the WiMAX technology the wireless network will cover whole cities or even countries. Users will be able to access the internet anywhere in the city and with the same download speed as they can achieve with the DSL connection from their own home. Also networks can be deployed in rural areas to bring broadband services to areas where DSL and cable networks are not available.
Nowadays most PC users use the internet for applications such as video streaming, large file downloads such as music, and online games which would not have been possible just a few years ago with dial up modems. These applications, whether being accessed from home or from WiFi hot spots, require the broadband speeds of cable and DSL connections to the ISP.
However fully mobile users (those who do not wish to stay at home or in a particular WiFi hot spot) may find it impossible to access the internet, or they may only be able to access at the lower speeds of the 3rd generation (3G) cellular networks.
WiMAX technology now makes it possible to give wireless network coverage over a much greater area than any single WiFi hot spot. Large cities can be covered, even entire countries could be covered. The PC user can now use the wireless adaptor in his PC or laptop to gain access to the internet from anywhere in the city, and that access will achieve the high broadband data rates which the user gets at home.
Many major manufacturers now produce laptops and netbooks with integrated WiMAX capabilities, and wireless networks have been deployed in many major US cities. Also remote areas, which have been ignored by cable and DSL, can now have high speed wireless internet access as wireless ISPs bring services to those communities.
People who already own a laptop, netbook or PC should be able to upgrade by getting a WiMAX dongle. This will be connected to one of the computer's USB ports, and should allow you to connect to the WiMAX network in your city. In a remote area it is likely that you will find the signal from the transmitter tower is weaker and instead you will need a gateway device to get proper reception. Some of these gateway devices are placed indoors, near to the window with the strongest signal is best. Other gateway devices are fitted like a satellite dish on the outside of the house.
