Wind Mills For Home Electric Power Aren't For Everyone
Windmills for home power may be the greatest idea in the world for some and a totally lousy idea for others
. It is up to you to assess and decide which group you fall into.
With all the green talk these days, there is a lot of social pressure to do something to work on your carbon footprint and try to reduce it. But, there are a number of ways to make a dent in your carbon and a wind turbine might just be an expensive roof ornament if you aren't careful and check things out from the git-go.
Here are some of the things to consider and why windmill power might just not be the thing for you to do at this point:
1. It doesn't work in your neck of the woods - of course in this environment fewer and fewer communities outright ban wind power resources, it is a fact that some cities and neighborhoods will only allow them in certain highly restricted formats. For example, some restrict the height of towers and some say how many feet the turbine has to be away from buildings or the edge of your roof.
2. Your property is under-winded - some places just don't have enough wind to make enough power to make the investment worth your while. A new windmill is a lot of work and cost to get set up and if the technology that is within your price range needs 9 mph average wind and your average is 5 mph, it won't work for you. Wind power design has more work to do to make equipment that will work for you at those low speeds.
3. You are space challenged - if you assess and the windmill you need has an effective footprint - meaning foundation and blade path that is 100 square feet and you live in a city with only 50 square feet of roof available to you, wind technology isn't for you yet. Keep in mind - if it doesn't work, it just doesn't work. Don't try to force it. There are other renewable power generation choices, like solar power, that might work fine for you.
The wind power technology will catch up one day and low speed wind turbines will dot the landscape. Windmills for home power have a bright future but they just aren't perfect for every home until the designs improve to the point where the speeds when they kick in and start making power are VERY low.
