Wind Power Systems For Home Use by:Lee Maynard
When looking for a way to generate electricity for their home most people think of solar power
. While this is a good solution, home wind turbines are also a very reasonable alternative for most homeowners. Home wind systems will generate plenty of power and are more reliable, more quiet, and more efficient than previous models.
Generating your own power with a wind power system will give you many advantages. Unline solar panels that can only work during the day, wind turbines can run 24 hours a day as long as wind is present.
You need to think about your lot size and it's elevation before deciding which type of system you want to install. The factor that most effects power generation of a wind turbine is finding a strong wind for as long as possible. You might have to install the unit on a higher tower to get access to the required wind, or locate it in an area of your lot that is not blocked by the trees.
When selecting a home wind turbine you really have a choice between two different styles. There is the traditional horizontal style turbine and the newer vertical wind turbine.
The horizontal home wind turbine uses a rotor assembly with a number of blades that spin when the wind blows. This rotor assembly is connected to a generator by a shaft assembly and this generator is what generates the electricity when it spins.
There are a few drawbacks to this design and you need to know about these before making a decision. First, because the blades are larger, it takes quite a bit of wind to get the horizontal home wind turbine rotating. You might use a turbine that isn't as large that would turn with weaker winds, but it wouldn't generate as much power because it is smaller.
The next issue is that the horizontal models have to face the wind and the wind's direction is always changing. This rotation is done by the wind and the turbine cannot generate electricity until it is in position.
The turbines that are vertical are designed differently than the horizontal kind. They sit in a vertical fashion and don't actually use blades to spin their shaft. Vertical systems will have scoops attached to a shaft that will rotate.
This can be a benefit because it looks a little less conspicuous than a large horizontal turbine. Also, because the rotating shaft is vertical you can mount the heavy generator near or at ground level.
One other advantage is a vertical system is set in one position and will turn in wind coming from any direction. It is more efficient than a horizontal turbine because it can still move even if the wind isn't all that strong.
The problem with the vertical wind turbine is that a horizontal turbine will generate more power for the same amount of wind. They don't produce as much power, but they can still generate electricity when the wind isn't strong enough to turn a horizontal turbine.
You can see that both designs offer advantages and whichever one you choose, it can really help you lower your electricity bill by providing quite a bit of power. Take your time and compare the different models and you can find one that is perfect for your needs.
