Windmill Companies: What They Make

Windmill companies of course manufacture wind power generation products for a variety of applications

. With the impending fossil fuel starvation we are facing, companies that make windmills are providing products for utilities that are wanting to shift some of their generation to sustainable sources and consumers who want to take back some control of their power costs.

The products they make are primarily for 2 markets

Utilities - These are major corporations that exist solely to centrally create electricity and natural gas supplies for us. When electricity first became popular, it was located near the point and of use and therefore dispersed in nature. Many of the developers of power generation technology saw local islands of power generation as being the way to go and not the mega-sized power plants that we see today. The economies of scale of power generation though dissuaded them from doing that. A lot more money could be made by building a mammoth power generation facility to run on coal or other fossil fuel. Now however, large utilities for coming full circle and beginning to disperse power generation to local communities. A major reason for this shift is the move to renewable energy sources as well. Large wind farms are beginning to be seen mostly in areas where there's a tremendous amount of wind energy available, like through the center states of the country. This is a major change because many utilities ignored this option up until recently. They saw their business model as being one of burning fossil fuels in these plants and therefore they had remained antithetical to the renewable energy movement.

Private Homes - Residential areas are the other major market segment for windmill companies. As people are seeing that large utilities are not reacting quickly enough to the shortage of fossil fuels worldwide, they are taking increasing interest in supplying their own electricity at their houses. This is particularly striking and interesting historically speaking because it is a return to the dispersed generation model of years ago and likely represents a strong trend towards personal responsibility for power production. Windmill companies would be wise to concentrate on this consumer trend even more than they are already doing.

The advances in technology that windmill companies are focusing on are:

Blade Aerodynamics and Weight - The biggest problem right now with wind energy production in most areas is that much of the wind is too slow to be efficiently converted into power. By studying and advancing blade aerodynamics, as well as reducing the weight of the blades, lower and lower cut-in speeds can be offered which will allow people to make electricity at a much lower average wind speed.

Cheaper and Lighter Materials - The more global manufacturing move to graphite and other super-low weight options is making windmill companies rethink the materials that they are making these devices out of.

Windmill companies provide the home wind turbine and other wind turbine products to a market increasingly hungry for innovation. The research and development money they now invest in their products is resulting in products that are cheaper that can take greater advantage of low wind situations that are found in most of the country.
