Window Warranty...Does it really matter and aren't they the same

?

A warranty is only as good as what it covers, right? So what should it cover? Well, that is up to you and your intended use of the windows. If you want to stay in the home for a good amount of time (usually 10 years or more), then you should make sure that it covers all of the items that you would expect to fix or replace on the window during that time frame. Here are just a few of the items that should be covered:

-Glass Pack should be covered against gas leakage (either Argon or Krypton) for the length of the warranty

-Vinyl fading or discoloring should be covered also. Good luck with this one. Very few companies cover it the way it should be. Usually they say it will not fade against the basic original color. In other words, if it's kinda white, it's white. Too bad.

-Pieces/parts should also be covered. The two most common repairs are to the locks and also the weather stripping. Locks are usually covered if they are manufactured incorrectly. If you accidentally break them, you will pay for a few new ones...along with the installation and trip charge to do so. The weather stripping is almost never covered either, but same story as locks.

-Accidental Glass breakage is usually not covered by most warranties. That means if your next door neighbor, Little Johnny, breaks the glass with an errant throw of a baseball, you need to have his parents pony up for the cost of the glass and labor to replace it or you foot the bill. Few companies actually cover those types of accidental breaks of glass, but it helps pay for itself when they actually do. If Little Johnny breaks the window more than once, it's time for lessons on throwing a ball or he should consider gymnastics.

If you have no intention of staying for more than just a few years, then you really need to consider the needs of a warranty vs. a very limited one on a cheap replacement window. A solid warranty on a house full of windows goes a very long way when selling and getting top dollar for your home. Some companies charge $100 or more to transfer the warranty one time to the next home owner, but you need to be aware of the added cost prior to buying the windows. The new home owner is usually responsible for this part of the process, but doesn't usually know, so they can't transfer it over. The ability to give any new home owner a warranty that is transferrable should be worth something. If not a couple hundred to a few thousand, then at least get a few gift cards to a local restaurant or two.
