If you've recently upgraded to Windows 7, you may need to update your printer drivers

While updating device drivers in Windows 7 (and earlier versions of Windows) is typically done through the Windows Device Manager, the process for updating printer drivers is different than for regular devices. With the introduction of Windows 7, the steps for updating printer drivers have been modified slightly. Though different, the process is not overly difficult.

First, go to the Start button and click on the Devices and Printers button. If this button doesn't appear in your Start menu, you can also access it via the Control Panel. Optionally, you can type the word "printers" into the Start button's Search box and then click on the Devices and Printers link when it appears in your list.

Once the Devices and Printers window opens, you'll see a graphical layout of your computer's devices. These devices will be grouped by type such as: Devices, Printers and Faxes, and Unspecified. Look under the Printers and Faxes category for the printer that needs an updated device driver. Either double-click that printer or right-click it and choose "Printer Properties" from the list. If choosing the right-click method, be aware that there's a difference between "Printer Properties" and "Properties," so make sure to look carefully and select the correct option.

If you double-click your printer, you'll see a different screen than if you open the Printer Properties dialog box directly. In this case, double-click the "Customize your printer" option which will then launch the Printer Properties dialog box.

Now that the Printer Properties dialog box is open, click on the Advanced tab. This tab is broken into three areas. The top area has a drop-down box labeled "Driver." You can either select a different printer driver from the drop-down box or you can use the New Driver button to launch the Add Printer Driver Wizard. The drop-down box option is useful if your computer currently has several compatible printer drivers installed.

After launching the Add Printer Driver Wizard, click Next followed by the Windows Update button. Windows will search for the latest printer drivers for your computer's processor and the Windows 7 operating system. This step may take a few minutes. Once the list of printer drivers has been updated by Windows, select your printer's manufacturer from the list followed by the printer model. Click Next and then Finish to complete the process.

You may or may not be prompted to restart your computer. While it's tempting to skip rebooting your computer after updating device and printer drivers, doing so is smart, even if you are not prompted to reboot. Many device driver updates do not take full effect until after the system has restarted. Save yourself the frustration of unnecessary printer driver troubleshooting by restarting your system.
