Windows 7 - The Beginning of a New Era in the OS World

Windows 7 - The Beginning of a New Era in the OS World

With Vista's past, full of issues regarding device compatibility, invading pop ups and notifications, and of course the biggest problem: performance, Microsoft needed to do something to wash their shame. So in 2009, they have launched Windows 7 - the beginning of a new era in the OS world. At first glance, the new OS looked like a Microsoft Vista service pack, but in reality the new Windows 7, is an OS free of all the issues encountered on Vista.

A big difference is that Windows 7 is focused on performance, not on fancy features, and aims to be compatible with any type of hardware and software. The biggest improvement of the new Microsoft OS is fragmentation, which means that it supports multiple hard drives at the same time.

Improvements on Windows 7 start from the early beginning: install wizard and UI. Now you can install an OS without being a computer genius. A fresh install, not an upgrade, takes up to 45 minutes (including the well known restarts). After installing it, Windows 7 might not recognize some of your drivers, but do not panic (!!), Windows 7 will resolve this for you by downloading them through Windows Updates.

The new taskbar replaces the "Quick Launch" bar (used for launching applications) and the old bar (used for switching between opened windows), and performs the job of both of them: launches and switches between running windows (kind of like Mac OS X Dock). The taskbar also has a feature called "Jump Lists" that works like this: when you right-click on the Internet Explorer icon you will see the list with the most visited websites, and when you right-click on Microsoft Word you get the list of the recent used documents.

The other feature from the taskbar is the "Start" button, which is not so different from the Vista version. You can still make searches within the "Start" menu to an easy and fast access to your documents and applications. The difference is that the "Jump List' is also integrated into the "Start" menu button.

As you probably already know, the "Start" menu button could have been disabled for Windows XP and Windows Vista, but now with Windows 7 you are obliged to have it and use it. The "Remote Desktop Connection" also benefits from the new "Jump List", and now you can see all the remote desktop connections you have saved.

The "Control Panel", also brings new moves: when you are on the main screen of the "Control Panel" and click on a category, the category main screen flips on the right, and a list of relevant action is displayed on the left side.

With major usability and security improvements, and support for new technologies, Windows 7 is indeed a user friendly OS and it is what Vista should have been several years ago.
