Windows 7 Touch-screen Laptops
Touch-screen notebooks are not a new thing, especially in the realm of smartphones and PDAs
, however owing to disappointing hardware and the lack of OS support, they've remained a minute market niche for business notebooks and desktop systems. Until now. But things look to brighten up with the introduction of the new Windows 7. It not only offers enhanced stability, better performance and a sharper appearance, it's the foremost mainstream operating system that supports touch screens from the base. Rather than adding in touch software piece by piece, as it was with Windows XP and earlier efforts, Windows 7 can run as a touch system at all levels of the OS. The result is smoother and more reliable response.
Pushed by the release of
Windows 7 and new hardware, it is predicted that the number of touch notebooks sold could surge from today's 2 to 3 percent of the market to as much as 10 percent in 2015. More to the point, they will be going from exclusively business systems to those that consumers buy as well. On the hardware side, the trick to adding touch is the digitizer, a translucent grid array that is located on top of a notebook's LCD display. In the past, the initial resistive digitizers, which ran by using pressure to make two sheets of material touch, weren't reliable enough, needed too much pressure and could only handle a single input at a time.
In comparison, today's capacitive digitizers work when the user disrupts an electromagnetic field on the screen's surface with a finger or specialized stylus pen. They respond to the slightest of touches and can handle several inputs at once, which means one can use complex gestures, like those supported by Apple's iPhone. In order to enlarge an image one will have to pull your thumb and forefinger apart. Pivot your forefinger around your thumb to rotate it.
Capacitive digitizers also make for more better handwriting recognition. Though character recognition is still not perfect, it has gained enough momemtum that most users can successfully enter Web addresses and note lists and words or short phrases. However, on the lapse side, touch doesn't come cheap. Especially in the cases for systems with displays larger than those deliberated for a handheld, touch can add a couple of hundred dollars to the price of the computer. As touch-screen sales volumes rise, however, prices will fall. In the meantime, the first batch of Windows 7 Touch machines has arrived. In this review, Fujitsu's LifeBook T4410, HP's TouchSmart tx2z and Lenovo's ThinkPad T400s.
To see how it works, there was a test on how these systems measure up, each display was tried with a finger, pen or both. Leaving the keyboard and touchpad, a number of Web sites was visited, moved windows around, manipulated images, played games and so on.Each unit was also measured, weighed and examined and followed that with an thorough workout with the PassMark PerformanceTest 7.0 benchmark. The test builds up on every component and provides an overall score
