Windows 8; Progressing Towards Next Generation Operating System
Critics argue that Microsoft is following Apple since the former has included functionalities that are already present in Mac OS, into Windows 8
. Tablets being the new target of Microsoft, Windows 8 aims to take the traditional desktop computing to the mobile platform. From a new user interface to faster performance and enhanced security, Windows 8 takes computing experience to a whole new level.
Although the official date of launch is not revealed, Windows 8 is likely to hit the market along with the much sought after Windows tablets. Lets find out why Windows 8 being called the next generation operating system and how it is different from its predecessors?.
Devices to be powered by 128 bit processors?
After reaching the developers preview team, rumors have sparked that Windows 8 is going to be a 128 bit operating system with support for USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0. It is also being stated that biometric authentication like face recognition may also be included. This means the current set of hardware will not be able to run Windows 8 as they are either 32 or 64 bit. The new machines that will run this operating system will have to have 128 bit processing unit. Undoubtedly the processors will be multi-core and clocked at 3.0 4.0 GHz speed. The memory and graphics card will be 4-5 GB and 3.2 GB respectively.
Faster boot time and Performance
The start-up of these machines will be faster than ever before. Consequently, the extra time that users will get could be re-allotted to update the software. The operating system will come in three different versions Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. While Windows 8 and Pro will support PCs and tablets with x86 processors, the RT version will be allotted to ARM based devices.
Touch Optimized Interface and Office 15
Metro, as it is named, is a new tile-based interface that has been designed essentially for tablets. A tap on the tile would load the particular application which would be very useful to the business users.
Microsoft has taken another leap in the software segment by upgrading to Office 15. Although it is in the development stage, the new Office aims to upgrade the traditional apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and collaborate them with communication apps like Outlook, Lync and SharePoint.
Upgraded enterprise applications and back-end servers
The enterprise applications and back-end servers are slated for a revamp. Microsofts enterprise database will be upgraded to a new version called the SQL Server 2012. The Visual Studio that is used as a platform for application development and the System Center for managing IT have been also stated for an upgrade.
Biometric Authentication
Biometric authentication may not be new technologically, but for Windows users, the incorporation of face recognition will definitely be a feature to rave about. Talks are on for developing this software with Artificial Intelligence so as to detect human presence by adjusting color, contrast or brightness with the changing surroundings.
Faster data transfer
Support for USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 means data transfer will now be much faster than before. This would benefit professional usage to a great extent.
