Windows live messenger, was initially launched as MSN messenger in July 1999 and its current version was launched in December 2005
. This tool is an instant messaging client and is designed to currently work with Windows mobile, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. This instant messaging tool offers many features in addition to its basic function as an instant messaging client. It allows the user with the sharing folders feature which is a method of file distribution. When a file is added to the sharing folder for that particular person, it will immediately be transferred to the others computer if he/she is online. If on the other hand a user deletes a file, it will be deleted from the corresponding computer as well. This feature is equipped with an anti-virus program. This feature has been replaced with access to the Windows Live SkyDrive in the latest version of Windows live messenger.
This instant messaging client now supports PC-to-phone calls in addition to PC-to-PC calls. This feature is called Windows Live Call. In the Us, Telefonica supports this feature and in France, Orange provides a similar service. This service is available only in a few countries like Australia, the UK, the US, Germany, France, Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Finland. Orange supports this service in almost all these countries. In October 2005 Microsoft and Yahoo announced that they planned to introduce interoperability between Yahoo messenger and Windows live messenger. This interoperability was launched in July 2006. This feature allows the users of both these messaging clients to chat with each other by logging into only one of them. This feature can be used only if both parties are using the latest versions of either one client.
Offline messaging is another feature of the Windows messaging client. Messages can be sent to users who are offline. They will receive these messages when they log into the instant messaging client. In addition to this a user can appear offline and still start conversations with other online users. Many games and other applications are also available on Windows live messenger. These can be accessed by clicking the games icon in the messaging window. You can play the game with one of your friends or with many other people who are online. The Im initiative is an innovative feature introduced by Microsoft in March 2007. This feature connects the users with 10 organizations which are working for social causes. This feature is available only in the US.
Every time some uses Im, Microsoft shares some of this programs revenue from advertising with the organization chosen by the user. Other than this there is a feature S60 launched in select markets. This tool was developed mobile phones like the Nokia Smartphones. Using this, tool phone users can use the features like voice clips, grouped contacts, file and image sending, and certain unique features like integration with the contact list and tabbed chat. Hence Windows live messenger has uses other than simple chatting.
