There are various options and tools provided by Windows operating system to speed up your computer

. You can clean the disk, repair the registry, defragment the disk, check for errors and many more.

Disk Cleanup utility available in Windows can be used to erase temporary Internet files, erase downloaded program files, delete content of Recycle Bin, erase Windows temporary files, erase optional Windows components, erase installed programs, and delete unused restore points in System Restore.

To use Disk Cleanup tool, click Start "' All Programs "' Accessories "' System Tools "' Disk Cleanup. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, choose the file categories that are to be deleted and follow the instructions to proceed cleaning.

If your files take long time to open or it takes longer time to save a new file, it means you need to defragment your hard disk. Defragmentation collects and arranges all the files in contiguous memory locations. This makes faster searching and accessing the files. To start Disk Defragmentation, click Start "' All Programs "' Accessories "' System Tools "' Disk Defragmenter. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, select the disk and click Analyze button.

If your programs show file error or missing file messages then you should check your disk for errors. With time it is very much possible that system files become corrupted. Error checking tool provided by Windows checks for bad sectors, invalid files, and file system errors. To use this tool,

Open My Computer and right click the drive that is to be checked for errors. Choose Properties option the context menu. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab. Click Check Now button in the Error Checking section. In the Check Disk dialog box select the options to automatically fix errors and bad sectors.

Some times you will notice that your programs are behaving abnormally, multiple copies of the same program are created or extensions of the files are changing. All these errors can be due to a virus. Install antivirus program to protect your computer from any attack and heal the files that have already being infected.

Invalid entries in the Windows registry can also be a major cause to frequent error messages and slow computer. Windows registry holds critical information about software, hardware and their default settings. You can load a backup copy of registry if you have saved earlier when it was working. Third party registry manager tools can do the job easily.
