Windows Update Error Caused by Malware - How To fix the Update Failure in Vista

If you are having problems running windows update on your windows vista computer there can be several reasons for this and you can fix them. If you find that each time you try to run the windows update you get an error message about being unable to reach the update server there are several steps you can take for a windows update fix.

#1 Ensure there are no problems with your internet connection. If the connection keeps getting dropped or is not working correctly then many updates will fail. Check other websites are loading correctly in your web browser.

#2 Check the data and time is correct on your computer. If the date is wrong this can stop windows update from working. This can happen if you have lost power, the BIOS settings have change or malware has infected the computer. If the date and time is wrong correct it and then run a full virus scan.

If you have checked these and your internet connection is OK and the date and time are correct you may have malware on your computer preventing you from reaching the windows update site.

How to check for malware causing this.

#1 Go to the start button on the taskbar and then to run and type in CMD and press return.

#2 Type in ipconfig /all and press enter. Scroll down to where it says local area connection or Ethernet adaptor.

#3 In this section look at the DNS server settings. If they resemble the following they have been hijacked, or if they are settings you know are not used by your ISP then you need to correct this.

85.255.113.122

85.255.112.83

85.255.116.148

85.255.112.223

How do you stop this?

This malware may be the Google redirect virus or other malware such as the DNS changer ware causing this. Since you do not know which one it is trying to remove it manually will be extremely difficult. Here is what to do.

#1 Download a system and registry scanner and get rid of any running malware automatically.

#2 Go to the windows control panel then open network connections. Right click on where it says local area connection and then on properties. Inside the box click on tcp/ip then click on the properties button and then click on the dial that says "obtain DNS server address automatically". Once you have done this save the settings and restart your computer.

If you find the internet connection is still not working. Check the DNS address again as detailed above. If it is empty or all zero's then you will need to contact your ISP as you will need to enter an address in there. In most cases this will be entered automatically though and you will have fixed the vista windows update malware problem for good.
