In this Key Note Market Report the UK windows and doors industry is analysed in terms of the four main materials used unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U), wood, aluminium and steel. The total market in 2009 was estimated to be 5.63bn. By material, the main sector is PVC-U followed by wooden products.
The market for windows and doors is largely dependent on the housebuilding and repair/maintenance sectors, although the commercial sector is also important. This sector includes health, offices, education and retail projects.
Structurally, the windows and doors market includes several types of companies ranging from small local installers to those with national coverage. As well as window fabricators there are companies making profiles and hardware which are in turn sold to fabricators.
This report traces recent trends in market size for each window or door material. Overseas trade statistics are discussed, with particular reference to country of origin or destination. This analysis showed that the UK had a large trade deficit for windows and doors in 2009, especially for wooden products.
One of the consequences of the current UK economic downturn is that there has been a decline in housebuilding, one of the most crucial markets for the windows and doors industry. In addition to the new build market there is a large replacement market, the domestic scene being especially important here. Although, now that many original windows and doors have been replaced it is more difficult to penetrate the remaining market. There is, however, a growing market for replacing the first generation of replacement windows and doors with more modern products.
More and more window and door companies are now adopting the principles of sustainability. This involves paying attention to material sources and for end-of-life windows or doors, recycling and final disposal. On a broader front there is increasing concern about carbon emissions and the effect that they have on climate change. The Building Regulations are gradually being changed to incorporate a more energy efficient performance of products and changes are taking place that will affect the windows and doors industry.
The UK windows and doors sector is facing difficult market conditions, with problems in obtaining credit remaining an important issue. In order to reduce public sector debts, the Government is now announcing plans for deep cuts in most of its departments. The extent to which these cuts will affect the construction industry have yet to be determined.
