Windshields Are A Key To Safety

We all want to be safe in our vehicles

We all want to be safe in our vehicles. One of the features we need to maintain in the car is the windshield.

Most of us can easily tell a vehicle's most obvious safety features, which include parts like seatbelts, airbags, tire pressure, and tire tread. When it comes to car safety most people ensure that these items are kept up to standard, both to prevent accidents from occurring, as well as to protect us fully in the unexpected event of an accident.

These features are important, but there is one feature that is commonly overlooked.

This important safety feature of your car, truck, or van is the one that is literally right in front of your eyes. It is your vehicle's windshield.

Your vehicle's windshield plays a vital role in the prevention of injury or death in the event of a car accident. In fact, most automotive safety professionals have ranked the windshield as the third most important safety component in your vehicle, directly behind seatbelts and airbags.

It is so important because whenever there's an accident, the most likely thing to break is the windshield. Even a small crack can spread across your area of vision or it can spread into the inner layer of your windshield.

The windshield is an important safety feature because it makes it possible for the driver to see what is in front of them and shields them from dust, rocks, and other objects.

The windshield of your car and other safety features are all part of a safety network. This network is commonly referred to as the vehicle's Safety Restraint System, or SRS.

All the individual components of the Safety Restraint System rely on the functionality of each other. If there is a problem in even just one minor aspect of the SRS, it will likely lead to a complete failure of the rest of the system.

It is well known that seatbelts and airbags are dependent upon one another in order to provide full support in the event of an accident. Both are there to support your body. Additionally, most of your vehicle's safety features are also dependent upon the windshield.

The windshield is a key component in providing support for the vehicle's airbags. In particular, the passenger seat airbag is supported by the windshield.

Without this support, the airbag would be incapable of being fully deployed resulting in less protection in the case of an accident.

If the windshield is rickety, it may very easily break or fail in the event of an accident, especially a rollover. This causes the passenger compartment to fall in on itself, putting the vehicle's occupants at extreme risk of injury or death.

Another prime example of how your vehicle's windshield protects you during an accident is found in the way the windshield is manufactured. Every auto windshield is made of two sheets of glass, with a thin layer of polyvinyl butyrate in between.

In the event of a collision, the glass may break. If this particular type of glass breaks it will not shatter because of the way it has been manufactured. The thin layer of adhesive plastic that is found in the middle of the glass will hold it together.

The adhesive will prevent the majority of the glass from shattering and causing cuts and scratches to the occupants. This greatly decreases injuries caused by flying glass.

It allows the windshield to provide somewhat of a cushion to the passengers, should they strike the windshield. The polyvinyl butyrate is a flexible glass which reduces the amount of force exerted to the occupants upon impact with the windshield.

Windshields are safer now than in the past. The manufacturing of glass has helped make glass a stronger and more flexible material.

Maintaining your windshield is not very difficult. If there are cracks it is best to get them filled in a timely manner. If the entire windshield needs to be replaced, replace it.

One of the most common problems with windshields is cracking. These can generally be from small rocks or pebbles that hit the windshield when driving on the freeway or highway. Many people think it is not important to get fixed or that it is just a minor problem.

It is important to get them fixed as soon as possible because a small crack may spread and get larger. Cracks tend to spread faster in cold weather.
