Bottling of finished wine:

The critical step in winemaking is bottling. This final dose is done to preserve the wine and prevent from fermentation in the bottle. The bottles are sealed traditionally with a cork. There are also alternative wine closures such as synthetic corks and screw caps. These are becoming more popular that are less subject to cork taint. The final step is fitting a capsule at the top of the bottle. It is then heated for a tight seal.


Some of the key steps to be carried out before bottling to ensure successful bottling are as below:

1. Quality plays a vital role in entire process. The department must ensure quality of bottles, corks, boxes, capsules, labels, etc. To maintain the quality one should always create unique and innovative labels, design for bottles, corks, etc. Before delivering, the quality standard must be set by the company.

2. All the machinery must be in hygienic condition, which guarantees the suppliers absence of contamination. The main process of maintaining hygiene is through cleaning.

3. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a preservative used in winemaking because of its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. To retain wines freshness SO2 plays vital role. Nevertheless, it should be checked that doses added is minimum in wine and the consumption is harmless.

4. Tasting and analysis of the wines is essential. This must be done to retain the taste and quality and analyzing chemical components in the wine is important.

5. When a wine completes fermentation, there is a cloudy appearance at the top of the wine. This is because of yeast, bacteria or fragments of grape cells at the top of the wine. Hence, fining and filtration is needed.
