Camping in the snow is not for everyone, but can be a great experience if you are prepared

. Winter time can be a very hazardous season to brave the outdoors. You see stories on the news all the time of the camper that was found in their RV, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, or hypothermia being the culprit. If you are smart, this will not be you.

Before ever leaving home, make sure you check the batteries in the detectors (smoke and carbon monoxide). You might have just changed them on your last outing, but change them to being fresh and full of juice. You and your familys lives depend on those alarms working. Check the life of your fire extinguishers and that they are appropriate for the different areas of your RV.

Never run the engine of the vehicle to stay warm. Make sure you have plenty of propane, blankets, and clothing for that. Check with local guidelines no matter where you will be filling up. Make sure you can meet the criteria, as some places have very strict policies on indoor propane use.

Using an outdoor grill or camp stove indoors will play out badly for you. Not only is it a bad idea to let these burn inside, it also consumes oxygen to stay hot and replaces it with carbon monoxide.

Adding double panes to your windows will help hold a lot of heat inside. Some people use plastic sheeting as a barrier, some use actual glass panes, some use plexi glass and brackets to hold them in place.

Even though you will be staying in the RV trailer, there are certain antifreeze procedures to follow. The web is a great marketplace of information, use it. Some rigs may differ from others so be sure that the information you find will work on yours. The most important part is not to drink the treated water. Keep big containers of clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing.

Vents are necessary to keep mold and mildew from growing. When it is so cold outside and warm inside, things tend to get coated with condensation and when it stays moist and warm in a place long enough, it encourages mold to grow and can make you sick. Good ventilation is the key to solving this problem. But, you say, if you open the vents, it will be freezing in there! Not if you build simple boxes that you attach to the roof, my friends. make them large enough to slip over the vent and allows you to pop open those vents so your trailer will breathe.

One more key word of advice. Tell someone where you are going, exactly. That way, if tragedy does strike, they will know where to look for you. Those that do not have a chance dont tell anyone a word so trying to find a beginning point is next.

Become familiar with where you should have cell phone reception. But be aware that snowstorms or unexpected weather can take out towers. Have a shovel and chains for an alternative to getting out of a bad situation.

It is very possible to enjoy your RV trailer year round, whether vacationing at the lake in the summer or enjoying coffee and skiing in the winter. Dont be caught unaware, be very prepared!
