So, with the first smatterings of ice on the windscreens, it seems the cold weather has descended again. Make sure you are safe when driving by following these tips.

When you are driving in the snow, make sure that you have your speed right. Don't drive too fast as you risk losing control of the vehicle, but by driving too slow the car could lose momentum.

Avoid high revs when starting the car, as it will dig you deeper into any snow drift. Be gentle, and this way you should ease out of parked.

Triple stopping distances. Remember that everyone else will be nervous about driving, so keep your pace behind.

Plan your journeys around the roads that have been gritted, as the smaller country roads won't have been considered. Choose roads that a lot of other traffic is using as the ice will have melted.

Be aware that if you are driving behind a large truck, that they may have a large amount of snow on their roof which could blow off onto your car.

Fresh snow can have frozen ice underneath it, so be careful for slipping if the snow has been falling for a few days.

When driving in snowy conditions, keep a track of where you are, in case you break down. When there is snow everywhere, it's very hard to recognise landmarks, so remember road names and villages.
