Winter Garden Design Ideas
Obviously the winter months bring with it many challenges for the green fingered gardener
. But there are many different Winter Garden design ideas that you can follow and useful inspiration. Combating the cold weather is always going to be the main challenge but this is something that we are able to overcome and have been successfully doing so for many, many years.
It is even reported that as far back as Roman times many people had and enjoyed successful cold weather gardens! However during the decline of the Roman Empire this novelty disappeared along with many other incredible Roman inventions and it wasn't until the Victorian aristocrats of Great Britain that it came back into fashion.
When it comes to some good design ideas we can separate them into two groups, indoors and outdoors.
Firstly with indoor designs it is far easier to combat the problem of subzero temperatures and it is these indoor designs that were popular with the Romans and still remain very popular today. If you grow plants or vegetables inside a greenhouse or inside some kind of glass conservatory it is easier to maintain a suitable temperature. Think about what type of indoor facility you have and this will denote the type of heating you need. Inside your conservatory central heating can work well but a greenhouse will require some other type of installation.
For your actual garden design there are many variations that you can use from raised indoor beds in a large conservatory through to a subtropical playground in an orangery type building or quite simply some unique window boxes style to suit your interior decor. A brief search on the Internet will reveal thousands of different pictures of some great examples.
With outdoor garden design ideas you may have to think a little harder about how to combat the cold weather. Obviously there are year-round evergreen plants but most head into their sleep period during this cold time. Therefore choose plants and trees that still hold interesting shapes and interesting colors even when they have lost all of their leaves.
For a winter garden it is important to think about the shape and structure you are creating. For example a garden with sinewy flowing lines will be far more appealing to the eye than your standard box shape lawn and square borders. Interesting shapes in your garden will remain fascinating to look at even when the borders and trees are not in full bloom as they are in spring or summer.
Planning any type of indoor or outdoor space for the cold season can be a little challenging, especially if your knowledge of horticulture isnt vast. This is where hiring a professional is worth every penny. They can guide you towards a design that lights up your imagination and they can provide you with the perfect combination of trees, plants and shrubs that will ensure your garden has shape and color in all 12 months of the calendar!
