Winter Weather Gives Parcel Delivery Companies Chance To Shine
Having been hit by the earliest severe winter weather for many years
, many UK residents went into winter mode several weeks earlier than usual this year. But while drivers across large parts of Scotland and the north-east of England in particular were told not to go out unless their journeys were essential, there were thousands of drivers who had to carry on as normal.
Many of those are employed by courier companies, and for them, the weather only gets in the way of a prompt delivery when it becomes severe. Courier drivers by and large are so dedicated to their job that they take it as a matter of personal pride that they can beat the elements and get every one of their deliveries completed. Indeed, nearly every time that the weather hits the UK hard, tales emerge of courier drivers going out of their way, not only to deliver the parcels, but to ensure that the customers they know of who might have problems coping with the cold weather are looked after and supplied with everything they need.
Its a particular challenge for them that this year the severe weather has come just as they are building up towards their busiest period, meaning that they face extra deliveries on top of their regular workload. At this time of year, the volume of post and parcel deliveries to be made increases massively, so this is where a courier drivers excellent knowledge of his or her own territory comes into its own.
While they will do their utmost to get every delivery to its destination, they also know that taking undue risks for example by taking a short-cut which is lightly used and is therefore unlikely to have been gritted and so be unsafe can be counter-productive.
Most drivers would far rather take longer to ensure that every one of their deliveries is carried out safely, than face having to return to their depot with some deliveries uncompleted because they have run into a problem in trying to cut corners. And for anyone who drives for a living, having to be rescued can hurt their pride.
So anyone expecting a delivery when the weather turns rough should spare a thought for the people at the sharp end of it. They are doing a tremendous job, and their dedication remains the same no matter how wet or slippery conditions become.
