There is a lot of controversy out there with regard to Christmas tree fires. Some proponents of a live Christmas tree says Christmas trees cannot start fires on their own. Really? Of course a tree does not just combust into flame, destroying the house. Using unapproved or damaged lighting, numerous extension cords, real candles placed nearby, tree not watered regularly, highly flammable decorations; there are many reasons a Christmas tree may catch on fire and that is a fact we cannot ignore. While Christmas tree fires are not common, they are deadly serious when they do occur. One out of nine Christmas tree fires result in death.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, more fires occur in winter than any other season. And these fires are not just caused by Christmas Trees. Other dangers lie in cooking, heating, electrical outages during winter storms, and faulty alternate heat sources. A generator not well-maintained or a faulty space heater can spark and cause fire. While candles are romantic and fun to decorate with, they can also cause a lot of fires.

Okay, we now know how these fires get started. What can we do to prevent them in the first place?

First of all, if you decide to purchase a live Christmas tree, keep the tree watered EVERY DAY. When decorating, make sure all of your lights are in perfect condition and UL listed. Are any of your ornaments flammable? Any decoration or light that can result in a spark should not be used.

When cooking, make sure your cookware is in good condition. Do not wear long sleeved, flowing garments that can catch on fire while cooking. Be mindful of what you are doing on and near the stove.

During a winter storm your electricity may go out or work erratically. Before purchasing a space heater, make sure that the heater is safe. If you have a back up generator, keep the equipment maintained. Both heaters and generators, not properly maintained, can spark and cause fires.

What happens if a fire occurs in your home while you are away? Christmas Trees tend to inflame rapidly. However, most other fires are not quite as dramatic. Having a smoke alarm in every room is a wonderful thing, IF YOU ARE HOME TO HEAR IT. Home Security Systems have fire protection as well as theft protection. Think about this: you are away for the day at your in-laws, spending that one day a year when you must tolerate your mother-in-law's snide remarks. A fire starts in your house you are away and safe. But what about Tucker, your golden retriever and Mack, your precious tabby cat, rescued from the pound? What will happen to them? Having a professional security system will ensure that the fire department will be called at the first sign of smoke. In fact, a family was sitting down in the living room watching TV when their alarm company called them to tell them their house was on fire. There was a fire in the attic and they had not even smelled the smoke yet.

I find it surprising that winter is the highest home fire season. So, why not take that one extra step for protection and install a home security system. There are so many other plusses to having a home security system, but this is a very important benefit that most people are not aware of.
