Winter and Your Outdoor Screens

Winter is a time when many devices struggle operationally. The cold weather, ice snow and prolonged darkness can make it difficult to start the car or operate machinery outside and it can play havoc with outdoor digital signage too.

Cold weather can permanently disable an outdoor screen if proper precautions aren't taken as condensation can freeze and ice can build up inside the enclosure which can lead to expansion so ensuring the display is kept above freezing conditions is important.

LCD TVs do generate quite a bit of heat. In normal conditions it is important that this heat is transferred away from the device which is why most outdoor LCD enclosures are fitted with internal cooling fans. This heat can be used to prevent freezing when temperatures drop to low.

One method for harvesting this energy is to have these cooling fans on a thermostats so when temperatures drop too low the fans switch off, allowing the heat to build up. Insulation can be used for cold climates to help keep this heat inside the enclosure but when temperatures drop too severely then heaters are going to have to be installed.

Protection needs to be put into preventing any moisture from entering the enclosure too. Ice and snow that builds up or falls on the enclosure will eventually melt so the outdoor LCD enclosure needs to be waterproof.

Outdoor digital signage, when properly protected, is really effective during the winter months. Because of the prolonged darkness, the self-illuminating screens show up really well during the winter months making them far more effective outdoor advertising tools than printed media.
