Some winters may be harsh with heavy snow fall, and severe cold temperatures, while others may be mild and not so cold. However, the children only believe it is winter if they see snow on the ground. Montreal is great city to enjoy the winter season in.
With snow covered rooftops, and tree's, it is just a wonderful sight to see.
Just as the winter season begins in Montreal, so do all the Christmas decorating. It is the one time of the year, downtown Montreal goes all out in decorating store fronts and even the streets. The first winter parade of the year known as "Santa Claus is coming to Downtown", is held on November 20th 2010. More than three hundred thousand people are expected to attend. The parade will showcase all the great Christmas traditions, dances, music and arts. Kids will gently enjoy the show, as it is quite entertaining and exciting. Mostly, all the shopping centers will have a Santa Claus visitation section, where kids will be able to take photos with Santa Claus. The Place Vertu Shopping Center, in Ville St-Laurent will be housing a great Christmas show this year. Winter does sound like a lot of fun, but there is always something that makes us think twice. With winter, comes a lot of snow, which brings with it some tough driving conditions. Montreal has set regulations, which indicates that all motor vehicles must have winter tires by the fifteenth of December. If you do not have winter tires by the stated date, you might get a fine if pulled over.
Overall, driving isn't so bad in the winter if you manage to drive safe and slowly. The city does its part by adding salt on the ground and shovelling off snow. However, in heavy snowfall, even the city can't do much on their part. The negative aspects of winter is just a minimal, the best part is that winter is mostly fun. The day after Christmas day, is the largest sales day of the year, known as Boxing Day. Many stores put out their old stock products on great discounts.
Electronic stores and clothing stores are a major hot spot on the day of Boxing Day.
For those who are interested, there are some festivals that take place in Quebec City, where you will be able to witness one of Canada's best ice sculptures, including the famous ice hotel structure. The old port region of Montreal is mainly recognized as a summer spot; however, winter surely brings a new meaning to it.
