Winterizing Your Kohler Generator

Fall is officially underway, which means winter is right around the corner

. You can remove any remaining liquid from the fuel bowl by opening the engine cover, usually on the left side, as well as the spark plug cover on top. Next remove the spark plug cable from the spark plug. Untighten the carburetor drain screw and remove the gasoline. Next, turn on the engine switch. Turning the engine over a couple of times will release the last of the gas. After this retighten the screw on the carburetor and turn off the engine. Plug the spark cable plug back in and close the engine cover.

Once you have taken care of the regular service issues, consider purchasing a cold weather kit, which are specifically designed protect generators from the harsh winter temperatures. One of the best cold weather accessories is a battery warmer. Many people have experienced dead batteries in the middle of winter. Sub-par temperatures suck the energy out of batteries, even those in generators. This device is wrapped around the battery and can be left there all winter long. It automatically turns on anytime the temperature dips below forty degrees, guaranteeing you have an operational generator when your family needs it.

Another great invention is the generator oil heater. Oil, during the summer months, is the slippery lubricant that is necessary for a generator to work at its optimum power level. The winter months challenges its normal consistency and aims to turn the oil in the engine into sludge. An oil heater can help you avoid this anti-friction gunk. Most crank case heaters use only 5W-30 so you might have to switch oil types before installing this device. In a similar manner of the battery warmer, the oil heater can be left in place and will automatically switch on once a specific temperature is reached.

It is good to keep in mind that power outages during the winter are just as serious as the ones that occur in summer. Instead of battling a heat wave, you are up against sub-zero temperatures. Do not allow your family to be left out in the cold.
