Wireless Burglar Alarm System - How Does It Work?

If the home wasn't wired for an alarm system when it was built

, then it's ideal to install it with a wireless security alarm system. Things that can be wireless and not needing to be hardwired back to the main control panel are motion sensors and door and window contacts. Even the control keypad can be wireless.

The various wireless components use RF (radio waves) to transmit their signals back to the main control panel. However, unlike the wired systems, wireless components run on batteries and you need to replace them once in a while.

However, these batteries can last for years and there are a lot of alarm companies offering services and maintenance plans to replace and install batteries.

These are the most common wireless alarm components.

Control Panel

The alarm system's "brains" is the control panel. These are often mounted somewhere out of the way like the basement or the closet. What it does is it triggers the alarm and if the sensors detect an intrusion and monitors all wireless component signals.

Keypad

The keypad is used to arm and disarm the system, as well as change various settings. For easy access, the location of the keypad is usually somewhere near the door.

The Magnetic Switch

Using these contacts, you'll be able to monitor the doors and windows. They're made up of a switch that attaches to the window or door and a magnet that is mounted on the frame. If the switch and magnet are separated (the window or door is opened or broken) it will trigger the alarm.

Motion Sensors

Motion sensors can be mounted in large rooms or areas like hallways. They will detect motion - and in some cases body heat - and trigger the alarm if it is out of the acceptable range.

The Video Cameras

A video feed back can be sent to a monitor and/or VCR in the house using wireless security cameras. They can be used to monitor outside areas that are not very visible from the street, as well as a way of seeing who is at the door before opening it.

The Remoter Keys

Remote keys are much like the remotes you get with car alarms. From a distance you can arm or disarm your alarm and turn on or your lights or unlock doors.
