Wireless Networking - The Good The Bad And The Dangerous
By now we are all aware of the advantages and convenience of a wireless network at home
. You can setup your computer anywhere within your home and easily add additional computers no matter what room there in. With this convenience also comes some danger and I am amazed that there isn't more public education on this subject.
An unsecured wireless network (or a poorly setup one) can pose a very serious and real threat to its unsuspecting user. There are a multitude of tools readily available on the internet to help anyone hack a computer, log keystrokes or take control. With an unsecured wireless network the task of the would be hacker is made all too easy. It's like leaving your front door wide open and a big sign out the front saying take what you want! Every wireless router broadcasts its name (unless it's turned off) and whether it is "open" or "secured". While you would think that secured is good, I'm here to tell you that it's not necessarily the case.
Like all technology today it is time saving, convenient and in the wrong hands dangerous. As with most things, if it's not what you do for a living then it's best to pay someone who does. As an example, if I were a hacker then some of my options when I find an unsecured network are; connect and download something illegal (because no one will ever find me, they'll find you) scan your network, connect to your computer or computers and load a key logger on there so I can get your passwords (internet banking etc) load a back door so that I can then connect to you computer when ever I want and do whatever I want. If you think that sounds bad...it is and they are only some of the things that could happen. I would strongly advise everyone with a wireless network to make sure that it properly secured and if you have any doubt seek the services of a computer expert. Remember most of us access our bank accounts via the internet!!!!
