With low cost airlines make things different
For all the environmental concerns, it is difficult not to be at least a bit enthusiastic
about how the low cost airlines have changed both the way we perceive geography and the manner in which we are used to travel these days. Before, most of us who could not afford travelling with classic carriers dominating on the aviation market and dictating prices, resorted to travelling by e.g. bus, ferry, car or a combination of them. As a result something as trivial from today's perspective as a trip to Spain assumed the proportions of back-breaking bus pilgrimage. Whereas today a number of low-cost airlines will carry you there for something between 10 and 40 if you were lucky enough to get hold of a cheap promo flight.
This development has been going on for quite a few years and it does not seem as though it will abruptly stop any moment now. Low-budget carriers open new routes to an increasing number of destinations on regular basis so consequently the choice of cheap flights is growing ever broader
The interesting thing is that the definition of low cost flights is changing in favour of us, travellers. Nowadays the notion of
cheap flights includes longer and longer distances so that flights to Israel, the United States or Asia may suit the pocket of even low budget travellers with a bit of planning.
The inevitable question pertaining to every development is whether or not it is sustainable and where the boundaries are? Even though there has not been a significant growth in the sector this year, we cannot talk about some dramatic decrease, especially given circumstances the lingering crisis and the recent volcanic eruption that cost both the low cost airlines and the traditional carriers million losses. So in spite of these probably just transitory problems the low cost airlines market appears to be robust so far. Although there are carriers suffering some setbacks (e.g. Transavia has decided to closer its Danish business and SAS is said not to be doing well), there are also examples of permanently growing carriers.
While it is difficult to predict how matters will stand in the next couple of years, one thing is plain as day it is not easy to imagine us going back to the way things were before this boom in the low budget sector for any reason. Especially, it is difficult to conceive of people renouncing
low cost flights on behalf of the environment.
