Witness Benovelence of a Wish Granting Deity in Pune's Sarasbaug Ganapati Temple

Surrounded by a breathtaking pond and occupying a pride of place in the religious core of all Puneites, lies the holy Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple. Also known as the Talyatla Ganpati Temple, this sacred venue of worship with a 225 year history is undoubtedly one of Pune's most visited and revered institutions with a mind boggling 10,00 visitors passing through its hallow gates each day. Originally constructed during the golden age of the Peshwa era, this monumental temple edifice has been a quiet observer of the city's evolution for over two centuries while remaining a focal to its cultural inheritance and legacy.

Renowned as the dwelling of the deities Kothrud, Shree Devdeveshwar Sansthan and Parvati, the temple is perhaps best known for the idol of Ganesh or Shree Siddhivinayak that occupies its central shrine. It is believed that the first Ganesh idol was placed within the premises as far back as 1784 and replaced twice in the 1880's and then again at 1990. Commissioned to be built in 1782, the first idol was completed during the period of Sawai Madhavrao Peshwe who was a pious Ganapathi devotee. With its imposing position on a 25,000 square foot hill it is difficult to believe that the mound in the centre of the pond was artificially created for the sole purpose of building the Sarasbaug Ganapati.

Having gone through several renovations and reconstructions over the centuries, the first Sabha Mandap in the premises was added by Kondo Mahadeo Kumthekar in 1937 with three additional Sabha Mandaps being supplemented in 1977.

A hotbed of activity come Ganesha Chaturthi festival and other red letter days in the Hindu religious calendar, the temple also serves as a popular venue for lectures and vocal recitals while ceremonies such as the Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshawe Religious and Spiritual Awards are also conducted at the locale. A focal point and a meeting place for Sanskrit scholars and the benevolent trust that oversees temple activities, it is also engaged in a variety of social initiatives that aids the local community.
