Witness Britains Rich History And Regal Legacy At Breathtaking Westminster Abbey
Formally identified as the collegiate Church of St
. Peter in Westminster, Westminster Abbey is nothing short of a British institution. Having hosted the crowning ceremonies of every sovereign in Britain since William the Conqueror, this 11th century gothic church ground is also the hallowed venue where the countrys rulers and most prominent citizens are buried and commemorated. Originally constructed by Edward the Confessor, the expansive church is one of the nations most recognizable landmarks and one of the single most visited historic attractions in London.
Decked with Gothic towers and magnificent halls that stretch skyward in ancient opulence, the abbey also houses memorials and statutory tributes to Britain and the globes most honoured personalities. The stone arched roof and decoratively gilded bosses of the structure extend 101 feet in the air making the abbeys nave the highest in all of England. Must-see highlights in the abbey include the Grave of the Unknown Warrior which pays tribute to the nameless thousands that were killed in the First World War, while The Choir where composer Henry Purcell himself was an organist is also worth exploring. The Sanctuary serves as the venue for coronations while a colourful mosaic of the Last Supper hangs overhead as a potent backdrop.
The shrine of Edward the Confessor is located east of the Sanctuary while the Cosmati floor montage with its Purbeck marble finish and Italian artworks is equally captivating. Edward the Firsts Coronation chair is also on-site in addition to the Lady Chapel built by Henry the VII. The Innocents Corner is another venerated site although the abbeys most frequented section is of course the South Transept and Poets Corner. As the burial site of literary greats the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, John Dryden, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, Edmund Spencer, Dr. Samuel Johnson and dozens more, the quarter also features commemorative plaques dedicated to some of the worlds most famous literary figures. These include William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, John Milton, Keats, Wordsworth, Shelly, Robert Graves, Oscar Wilde and countless others including celebrated war poets Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke and Siegfried Sassoon.
The vaulted undercroft at the Abbey serves as the Westminster Abbey Museum where guests will find impressive collection of royal funeral effigies, remnants of ancient sculptures and historic coronation chairs as well as other intriguing ruins and replicas.
