Witness The Worlds First Double Helix Bridge In Sunny Singapore
Described as an architectural and engineering feat that is set to captivate the world
for generations, Singapores Helix Bridge is already an iconic fixture in the cityscape of the Lion City. Having taken nearly two years to complete the bridge was opened in early 2010 amidst pomp and pageantry to coincide with the opening of the equally anticipated Youth Olympic Park. Constructed to provide a truly unique link to the countrys second biggest in integrated resort, the Marina Bay Sands, the overpass is a 280-metre long pedestrian walkway like no other.
Designed to resemble the helicoidal structure of human DNA, the structure has been built almost entirely out of corrosion-free stainless steel that also features state-of-the-art computer controlled mood lighting once dusk sets in. Built according to the vision of the Australian company Cox Group, Singapores own Architects 61 and engineering outfit Arup the structure also features nearly 2,250 metre long steel tubes winding in opposing directions. The connection with DNA is also denoted from the two pairs of letters that appear in green and red on the bridge facade once the sun goes down. Illuminating the characters G, A, T and C, the letters stand for guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine which form the basis of human DNA.
With its core material weighing a whopping 1700 tons similar to the weight equivalent of over 1100 saloon vehicles, it is hard to believe that one can walk the length of the bridge in less than five minutes. Situated alongside the suspended platform at Marina Bay, The Helix as it has been officially dubbed also houses five observational platforms that afford stunning views of the citys skyline. Various celebrations and events that are hosted on Marina Bay can also be viewed from the bridge which also serves as an outdoor gallery. A myriad of artistic expressions by children are to be displayed within the gallery area which also functions as a prime exhibition space in the city.
As the only hotel that also qualifies as a top
attraction in Singapore, the revolutionary Marina Bay Sands Singapore is breaking new ground in the worlds hospitality industry. With its own 12,400 square meter SkyPark and the worlds most elevated outdoor pool, this is one
hotel Singapore city undoubtedly counts among its finest accommodation providers.
