Women Are Cheating More Than Ever… For Different Reasons Than Men
According to recent statistics discussed everywhere from message boards and blogs
to women's magazines and on television news programs more women than ever before are either cheating on a spouse or are seriously thinking about cheating on their husband or partner.
Some relationship experts and feminists assert a connection between the women's liberation movement and equality for women in recent decades, claiming it is emboldening women to get more in touch with their own self-serving needs, thus making them feel entitled to cheat. As one feminist themed blog puts it, "Current research shows that women engage in intercourse with multiple partners as readily as men when they have the freedom and opportunity."
Whatever your own theory regarding an increase in women cheating and
thinking about cheating on their husbands, it appears to be unanimously agreed upon that women cheat for different reasons from men. In a quote from More Magazine which caters mainly to women in their forties and fifties, "[Cheating] is not just a boys' game. Many women I know, nice, respectful, wonderful women who love or loved their husbands, have had affairs." A woman can love her husband dearly yet still be inclined to cheat, just like a man would be, with a notable difference: it is not sexual variety she is after, but sexual and/or emotional fulfillment.
Citing an article entitled, "High Infidelity" by Marcelle Fischler, which explores the rising trend of women cheating, infidelity expert Ruth Houston asserts, "The No.1, 2 and 3 reasons for men [cheating] relates to sex.
''A woman cheats, for the most part, as a last resort. She has tried everything, her complaints have fallen on deaf ears and she feels she has no other alternative.''
According to Houston's own research, the most common reasons men give for cheating or
having an affair include: more sex (the desire for a more active sex life), sexual variety (a desire for different kinds of sex), opportunistic sex (taking advantage of an opportunity to have sex without the fear of getting caught), to satisfy sexual curiosity (about a specific female) or because of a general feeling of entitlement (something we see a lot among celebrities who cheat).
In contrast, by Ruth Houston's account, why do most women cheat on their husbands? A desire for emotional closeness and intimacy (someone to confide in and bond with on an emotional level), for attention (wanting be the center of a man's attention again), to reaffirm her desirability or to re-experience feelings of romance and to feel "special."
In other words, women frequently cheat as a way of experiencing being courted all over again, something that is often lost in long term relationships once men become comfortable and stop courting or "chasing" after their wives.
Men have an innate need to compete and to ultimately conquer and win, once they have won the woman in their life, they tend to focus that natural drive into their career, hobbies, friendships and other activities, leaving the woman wondering where the romance went. If her cries to be wined and dined more, made love to more, or complimented more are ignored, she will seek to fulfill her innate needs for romance and sexual excitement elsewhere.
