What do you picture when you think of rugby? Im sure it is a pile of men
, bleeding and sweating, beating each other to pulps in order to score a try! Rugby has been primarily viewed as a mans game since its professional formation in 1895. It has not been until much more recent history that women have begun to voice their opinions that they too would like to participate in some full contact rugby!
These days women have many more equality with men than they did in 1895, why not have the ability to play some rugby too? Womens rugby is becoming more and more popular throughout Europe and the United States. It is no longer viewed as strictly a mans game the way that American football is.
Women are getting stronger and faster and have created some very competitive rugby leagues. These leagues are not powder puff leagues either, they are full contact. There is the same amount of blood and sweat spilled as their male counterparts matches.
The women's rugby league Association was established in 1985 and was managed under the Rugby Football League, the same league that manages the males rugby league in Europe. From here womens rugby leagues became more and more popular. In the 2000s women's rugby league began to spawn up around the United States. Today you will find womens rugby clubs in most major universities and even some high schools around the country.
There are women's rugby league everywhere these days. If you are interested in joining you may sign up for a womens league or a male and female league. Each is becoming more and more popular. Like most club sports, if you are not interested in all of the full contact, there are leagues that are scaled back a little bit. Have fun and good luck!
