Wood Vs Vinyl - Which Siding Is Right For Your Home?

If you're building a new home, you already know that it can be both a blessing and a curse

. The blessing of course is that you can have everything just the way you like it, from the layout of the rooms to the type of paint on the walls. The curse is that you have to make a decision about everything!

One of the most important home design decisions that you'll make is which type of siding to place on the exterior walls of your house. Siding is one of the only things standing between the vulnerable wood and drywall of your house and the hard weather of the outdoors.

If you were to call up a contractor and ask them what type of siding they recommended for your future house, it's likely that they would quickly respond with "vinyl." A vast improvement over the aluminum siding that was popular a few decades ago; vinyl won't rust and doesn't need to be painted. Although it's accurate to say that vinyl siding requires less maintenance than wood siding, the claim that it doesn't require any maintenance simply isn't accurate.

It's important to be familiar with many different types of house coverings so that you can choose which one will perform the best on your type of house and in the climate where you're located. Too many people will choose a type of siding solely based on the price or the way it looks, and then when it's finally installed on their house for a few months, they realize that their hastiness is going to cost them a lot more time and money than they saved in the first place. That's why knowing some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type are useful.

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular types of siding, is low cost, and is available in a variety of colors. The downside of vinyl siding is that it's created from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which contains substances that have been known to cause cancer and other serious health conditions in the people that work in and around the factories where it is manufactured. Wood siding is easy to repair, durable, beautiful to look at and environmentally friendly when harvested correctly, but it can foster the growth of mildew, mold, and moss if not treated with stain or preservatives, and could be subject to rot if you live in a warm wet climate.
