The history of the furniture dates back to the 1700's, and it has been a staple in the lives of many people.

It is believed that the first rockers ever invented were done so in England. The Windsor rocker is one of the first noted adult rocking chairs in history. They were named for the location for which they were made, the Windsor Castle. Benjamin Franklin is primarily credited for crafting the first rocking chairs in America. He simply took a regular chair and added gliders from a baby's cradle to the legs to create a piece of furniture that could be swayed back and forth. In America, the first rocking chair was created in 1750, and the item quickly became popular.

Wooden rockers were first designed to be used for sitting in the garden. Many people enjoyed planting flowers, and like to be able to sit out and relax by their beautiful hard work. They were later moved to the front porch so that people could sit out and enjoy the day while still under the shelter of the porch. By the end of the 19th century, rocking chairs were the most common furniture for the outdoors.

Wood was the first material used to craft adult rocking chairs. This is because it was the easiest substance to use at the time. Wicker rockers were made famous in the early 1800's, mainly because of their sophisticated designs and intricate details. Today, rocking chairs are not just for adults. Children rockers can also be purchased. This allows your children and grandchildren to sit on the front porch with you. Rocking chairs are so special that they are considered heirlooms in many families, being passed down from generation to generation and given lots of care to preserve the wood.

As you can see, wooden rockers were a great invention, though no one who created them back in the 1700's would have known the craze would catch on so well. It seems that some people got tired of having stationary chairs and decided to combine the idea of the rocking crib with a dining room seat. The result was a device that many own and enjoy. Many families see their grandparent's or even their great-grandparent's rockers as a timeless piece of furniture to pass down through the generations.
