Wooden Toys

Children have played happily with toys made of wood for hundreds of years

. The enjoyment of toys a universal trait that binds children together regardless of race, religion, or cultural difference.

History

Wooden toys have been in existence since the dawn of recorded history. Archaeologists believe that the first toys were crudely-shaped wooden blocks. In ancient Greece and Egypt civilizations, wooden tops were popular. In ancient Rome, the favored toys were dolls, horses, and chariots. Toys made of wood continued to be a common part of childhood for thousands of years. By the 1700's, toymakers began to produce many different kinds of toys from wood. Over the next hundred years, toys became progressively more elaborate and detailed. Alphabet blocks were the favorite of children in 18th century England. Some items, such as the popular Jack in a box, were hand painted in bright hues.

Pioneer Toys


The early settlers fashioned toys from wood. Back in the days of the pioneers, wood was one of the most valuable and plentiful resources available for making just about everything, whether it was household items or toys for the children. Pioneer families had little money for store bought goods, so they made most items, including toys for their children. Most children's toys were made of wood, including such items as boats, dolls, doll furniture, jewelry boxes and wagons. Most of the surfaces were left without any finish. The early pioneers made most of their children's' toys themselves. The men carved dolls, whistles, and boats from wood. were their favorite, although many pull toys; cars and trains were fashioned from wood and attached to a string to be pulled over the floor.

By the end of World War II, a number of new materials had been introduced to the manufacturing industry including still popular plastic. After the Industrial Revolution, mostly plastic toys were used.

Benefits of Wooden Toys

Wooden toys are beneficial because:

* They do not need electricity or batteries

* They are natural

* They are non-toxic

* They are environmentally-friendly

* They are light, non-toxic, and easily available

* They last a lot longer than plastic ones

* They help develop coordination

* They develop the imagination and

* They are much more durable than plastic toys

* They stimulate the mind and encourage creativity

More often than not, toys made from plastic break within a matter of weeks.

. In contrast, wooden toys are simple, durable, have much educational value.
