Wool Sweaters - Know Your Choices
Wool is celebrated for its natural warmth
Wool is celebrated for its natural warmth. It is also water-resistant, holding moisture away from the body. There are several sources of wool, all being obtained from the hair or fur of animals. Each type of wool has its own characteristics and attributes for which it is known. This contributes to a wide range of pricing for wool sweaters, also. If cost is not your only consideration, you may want to learn about the different options you have when looking to purchase a cozy sweater for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
Sheep's wool is probably the most prevalent type of wool gathered for the making of sweaters. It is available almost everywhere in the world. Merino sheep can be found in Australia and New Zealand. They produce a very soft wool garment that usually sells for under $100. The Shetland Islands are home to Shetland sheep, whose wool is used for high quality knit sweaters. Lambs' wool is one of the softest sheep's wool available, and also the most costly. Closely related to the sheep are Kashmir goats. These are Asian mountain roaming animals whose hair is clipped to make sweaters that feel soft and silky. You may expect to pay $100+ for a Cashmere sweater.
Less common types of sweaters are made from camel hair. This is a very high priced and heavy wool, so it is usually blended with another type of wool to make a garment. Alpaca wool is another type used to make sweaters. Alpacas are mountain dwellers, similar to goats. The natural material of their long hair repels moisture and is lightweight. Alpaca wool is one of the mid-priced wool materials. Angora rabbits are the providers of the wool we appreciate in angora sweaters. It is light and soft, but expensive. Sheep's wool can be blended with angora wool for garment making.
How should you care for your sweaters? Most wool garments may be hand-washed in cool water, with mild laundry soap. They should then be laid down flat to dry. Some wool clothing may actually be machine washed using cold water, the gentle cycle and mild detergent. Some sweater manufacturers will recommend dry cleaning only for their wool garments. Always check the care label on your wool garments and follow the manufacturer's suggestions. It is customary to store these sweaters folded instead of hanging on a hanger. This helps to maintain the shape of the garment.
