Word Stance - What Is Yours?

Have you ever been criticized for taking a certain political position

? Have you ever been ostracized by your family or others because of who you voted for in an election? It may have been hard for you to stand up for what is right in the face of opposition, but God is on your side and He will honor you for making decisions based on His Word. There are many people in the political arena that want preachers to choose one political agenda over another, but my stance has always been, and continues to be, based on the Word of God. As Believers, our decisions must be based on and led by the Bible.

Sometimes choosing what God says over societal norms can spark controversy, even among Christians. In the midst of differing opinions, we must also be careful not to allow the spirit of division to wreak havoc in our homes, communities and churches. It is sad that some preachers have merely echoed the words that they have heard from society that promote a viewpoint that opposes God's Word. This is not right. If the Word of God is the Christian's final authority, then what we preach from our pulpits and the political stance we take must line up with it.

One of the key issues that causes many Believers to make bad decisions is their emotions; they do what seems or feels right at the time. The enemy is constantly seeking to devour Christians by planting words that oppose the Bible in their hearts and minds. When a person allows the enemy's words to take precedence over what God says, they can be swayed from the truth, just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3).

There are many Christian leaders in the political arena who would rather vote for or support an agenda that goes against the Word of God for the sake of "activism" than stand for the truth found in God's Word. Their feelings and opinions often override Biblical truth. When it comes to key issues in society, however, Believers can't afford to compromise, even if it means taking flak from those who support such opinions.

In looking at the political arena, it is also important to address the issue of selfishness. When politicians and leaders are influenced by their emotions or their own self-seeking desires, they have the potential to lead others down the wrong path. Selfishness hinders the power of God from flowing and meeting the needs of people, and compromising the truth of God's Word for the sake of popularity or to gain position and power is an act of selfishness.

"Love thy neighbor" is not a cliche; it is a commandment from God. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus emphasized the importance of loving the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind and loving your neighbor as yourself. He said, "All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments" (v. 40). While God has commanded us to love one another, He does not say that we should compromise and accept wrong doctrine in the name of love.

Satan's most powerful weapon is suggestion. He wants to cause people to doubt God's Word by asking, "Has God really said that?" Once doubt enters a person's mind, he or she has the potential to stray from the truth, and in these last days that is something you cannot afford to do.

You must be certain that you know the Word so that you are able to distinguish between right and wrong in every situation you encounter, including the political decisions you must make at the polls. This is why I so diligently and passionately teach the Word of God with simplicity and understanding. I encourage you to get in the Word for yourself and find out what God says about sin and some of the key issues that face society today. Make a decision to choose between right and wrong, God's system of operation or the world's way-- it's really that simple.
