Work From Home - Common Pitfalls To Avoid
The ability to work from home is a dream come true for many American families
. However, it is not without its pitfalls and drawbacks. While the idea of being able to work at home, in comfortable clothes, without the need for daily commutes and expensive wardrobes is understandably attractive, it is not an easy option to maintain. Issues with poor organization, work/life balance issues, and isolation are common for first time and even experienced at home working professionals. As such, before embarking on your home-based businesses adventure, educate yourself on common work at home problems and pitfalls, developing strategies to deal with them ahead of time or avoid them all together.
Some common work from home pitfalls include:
Poor separation of work life and home life. Especially with online or web-based home businesses, the convenience of having your office encased in your home PC makes it easy to blur the lines. Walking by the computer, many home-based professionals think "I'll just check my email really quick. It will only take a second to see if I have new orders." However, once emails are done, these home workers often do just one more thing, and then one more, and one more, quickly eating up what should be personal time. The blurring between work and home life will quickly lead to burn out if not properly managed.
Lack of good home office planning. Many professionals begin their work from home adventure on the family computer in the middle of common living areas. This can quickly become a problem when children, pets, or other household members try to go about their daily lives. Business phone calls often have background noise from such activities that can present a poor professional image. Setting up a proper home office, away from daily household activities prevents unprofessional background noise or distractions. It can also promote better separation of work and home life.
Lack of daily social interactions and isolation. When you work from home, you lose the daily exposure to others in a real-world environment. You no longer have coworkers whom you see on a daily basis. You no longer go out to favorite lunch spots during meal breaks. After a few months of working from home, your social circle can shrink dramatically. It is important to take the time to actively seek out social activities, whether lunch dates with friends, a mid-morning stroll around the neighborhood, or weekend hobbies.
