Take a good honest look at what is really going on in your life. How are you really spending your time? Keep track of it for a week if that would help. Once you know where your time is being spent, you are in a better position to get rid of things that are robbing you of time and look at ways you can become more efficient.
Work out the things you can do to spend more time on important things and less time on unimportant things. Here's a few ideas:
Take a day to clean out the clutter in your personal life - sell it or give it away - but clean it out. If you don't use it or it doesn't have sentimental value, then stop carrying it around like a weight on your shoulders and get rid of it. (You could even do this with people in your life, but be kind how you go about it). This will give you less to clean and worry about.
Implement some simple time saving measures at home like doing all your shopping in one trip, making lunches the night before, putting things away when you have finished with them.
Find ways for children to help... turn helping into a game.
Allocate jobs around the house. If you are trying to do it all while other family members do little - it's time to change. Allocate jobs equitably and have a regular system for doing them. Believe it or not, responsibility for jobs increases a person's self esteem... so more time for you and happier family members. If you don't have anyone else to allocate jobs to and you're too busy at work to do them - then pay someone else to do them.
Travel time - if you are spending a lot of time travelling, look for ways you can either (1) cut down travel time or (2) use the time productively. For example make the time you spend driving your children to school, precious conversation time or spelling time etc. Use the time spent on a plane for planning time.
Talk to your boss about the possibility of flexible working hours for a few years while your family is young. As long as the job is done, he/she may not care where it is done. You may be able to work from home 1 day a week or do 2 hours after your children go to bed at night. Before you dismiss it as not being possible... you may be surprised what lengths an employer may go to help keep an experienced staff member.
