Working As An Mt

WRITTEN BY: Rita Naughton

WRITTEN BY: Rita Naughton

My goal for my future is to be able to make a significant income from my own home. I had previously done medical transcription work at home in the 80's, but at that time I self-taught myself the terminology, the grammar, the punctuation, etc. I was able to work for a plastic surgeon at the University of Chicago Medical Center. While working for Dr. Z. I did his clinic notes, insurance evaluations, consultations, general correspondence and insurance forms. I also worked in the Radiology Department of Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL, doing the radiology reports. From there I worked for Chicago Partners, a medical office consisting of various physicians in varying specialties and practices and did all the radiology dictation for that department. I was the only transcriptionist at that location. I enjoyed the work and think that it would be a good fit for me at this time. I am thinking it should not take much to get up to speed with new terminology, techniques, drugs and equipment as I have the basic knowledge.

In 1998 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I applied for disability and have been on disability since 1998. I credit the good condition that I am in to the doctors who first diagnosed and treated me for the MS. The doctors immediately started me on treatment with Betaseron, the injectable I do every other day. I have tried working at other types of employment, but I am not physically able to do the whole eight hour routine of standing for long periods of time, lifting objects, or moving objects as when I was a checker for a local grocery chain. I also found working on a fast paced factory line difficult. I do know how to type. I have typed ever since I left high school. In high school I took shorthand and typing and had A's when I graduated. I worked in office secretarial positions until I was diagnosed with MS in 1998.

In 2000 I relocated to northwest Missouri, a rural area, and office jobs were not easy to come by. I finally got a job at a privately owned jail as a detention officer. After losing that job I began my own cleaning business, but the economy started going bad and I lost many clients. I then took a job as a part time secretary for a church which I enjoyed very much. I worked one day a week at the church, two days a week as a checker at the grocery store and one day a week cleaning an office. I am no longer able to do the cleaning work at the pace required to be successful. My brother has lived in Phoenix, Arizona, since 1999 and has always wanted me to move here. So in April of this year I relocated to Phoenix. I love it here. I think that the advantage of working as an MT would be the flexibility of working from home. I do not have a vehicle at this time and I rely on friends and/or my brother to take me shopping. I am on a fixed income and there is no money in my budget for a car with or without car payments. My credit is not good so I am not able to go and get a loan for a vehicle. Even if I had money for a good down payment, the prices of cars these days is more than I want to go into debt for. I can't afford a payment of more than $150 for a car, as I pay rent and utilities, and there is not much left over by the end of the month.

I thoroughly read about your company on your website and was very impressed with what you offered for training. I like the fact that you have a text book as well as an electronic text book to use. I saw the way the course is set up, the different specialties and the different types of reports you offer for practice. I know I need work on operative reports as I did not do many of those in my medical transcription jobs. I was impressed how you can do a search for a word or phrase if you have a question. From past experience I know how difficult it can be with some of the accents of some of the doctors. I also know it is important to work with the background noise and other distractions. I also thought it great that you have a typing test in the program so I can test my speed. My last test taken in Missouri was 67 wpm with 1 error and the lady could not believe I had gotten that score. She told me they were lucky if someone could type 35 wpm with 4 errors. I think the course, with the variety of specialties included, and the variety of dictation reports will give me the advantage and skills needed to get a job working at home for a medical transcription company, either through your resources or on my own. Looking over your course description I could see the advantages I would gain by your course and the possibility of starting my own transcription business locally here in Phoenix. I realize I need to learn what the new procedures are, the new terms, the new drugs and learn about the new technology out there before I can even consider this. But I can see this vision down the road. Also, I have read and heard from many sources, that the health care industry is growing quickly and that there is a need for medical transcriptionists now and in the years to come. I want to be in on that. I want to be able to support myself comfortably. I know what it is like to try and find a job and am told there are no openings. I know how to work physically hard when necessary. I also know that now is the time to think of me and my future, my health and my happiness. I am not afraid of work, but I would love to have the work here in my own home. In doing this type of work I will also keep my brain active, which is something needed in dealing with MS.
