Working From Home - A Mom's Secret to Make Money Writing Online
When faced with the choice of returning to a full time job teaching, or coming up with a creative way to spend more time with my 3 children, I committed myself to finding a way I could make enough money working from home to provide for my family's financial needs. Trying to make money online, or in the real world, can be a challenge for anyone. For a mom whose time and attention is focused on the family, it's a real dilemma.
I considered any options I can across: stuffing envelopes, home parties, network marketing, mystery shopping and more. And I truly believe that these are all good solutions for certain people at certain times. They just weren't right for me.
Luckily, I had another mom friend who had experienced so much success writing articles online that she had gone from being a freelance writer to a business owner. This woman generously agreed to hire me as a part time writer and send me some of her overflow writing assignments. With a seasoned pro to show me the ropes, and gently let me know when something wasn't right, I was able to get the gist of how to write online articles and other materials.
Now I don't want to give anyone the impression that I immediately started writing full time or made wads of money right out of the gate. Nor do I want to give you the impression that this was a fast and easy way to make money. I stumbled. I ran into some less than scrupulous clients. I made a LOT of mistakes.
However, within 3 months of writing for my friend, I was busy writing everyday while my kids were at school. It was at that point, and with her blessing, that I decided to hire a business coach and start hiring some of my own writers. Today, about 2 years later, I have a company built around the mission of bringing balance to both Internet marketers and moms.
My best advice for any mom who wants to make money writing for the Internet:
-Start now. Don't worry about what you don't know. If you want to make an online writing career (or anything) work, you need to be willing to make mistakes and learn as you go.
-Begin with articles. Write and publish your own on article submission sites like ezine and goarticles. That way, you'll have samples to show prospective clients. Edit it carefully, save it as a PDF, and add it to your portfolio.
-Bid like mad. Use Craigslist, Guru, Elance or any other freelance sites. Don't be discouraged by a lack of response in the beginning. It's a numbers game. If you commit to placing 20 or more bids a week, you'll get some results.
I truly believe that there are countless ways for moms to make money working from home. The route I took just happens to be the one that works for me.
