Working From Home - Advantages and Disadvantages of Working From Home
In the current economic environment more and more persons are choosing to work from home. Many people are opting for telecommuting and go into the office once per week or less while others decide to start their own home-based business. Whether you choose to start a business offline or online, there are pros and cons - advantages and disadvantages - to consider before making the final decision to work from home.
Advantages
1) Control over what you do; how and when you do it. Rather than being told what you should do, how you should do it, and when to do a particular job you will be able to choose to do something you enjoy doing and perhaps already excel at.
2) Convenience: By being your own boss you can establish a balance between your personal, family and career needs so as to keep them in the order of priority that you choose.
3) Reduce Costs: Less traveling to and from a job will reduce costs like gas and wear and tear on the vehicle. Costs can further be reduced as it affects items of clothing. As a former corporate employee one of my highest weekly expense was pantyhose. For many women not having to wear pantyhose (stockings) is more about freedom rather than money.
4) Building Your Family Relationship: Working from home can have a tremendous positive impact on the closeness that can developed among family members. This is especially so for mothers with small children. While there can be a downside to having small children around when you work from home, proper planning can help to make this a smooth transition that will result in a warmer, closer relationship between the parent and child(ren). For example, a mom who has to be at work at 8:00 am has to leave home pretty early depending on distance and traffic. If she works until 5:00 p.m. she has to battle traffic to get back home at which time she is frazzled and just wants some "me-time." That's just a wish because as she walks through the door she has to change hats and as much as she loves her family it can be challenging.
Disadvantages
1) Discipline:The biggest challenge I find in myself and other Work-at-Home women I talk with isdiscipline. It takes discipline to get to work in the first place at the times that you have set to work your business. It takes discipline to stay focused, stick to business and not be concerned about the chores that did not get done yesterday, last night, or this morning. And it takes discipline to stop working at a particular time, close the door and not worry about your business.
2) Distractions: The sources are numerous and we can use these very effectively as avoidance strategies. When we are putting off something that should be done for our business - something that we may not be comfortable with, e-mail, reading other people's newsletters, etc. can become time-consuming distractions. Other forms of distractions may be from our family and or/friends who refuse to accept that because you are in your home you are actually working. They feel they can sit and chat at any given time because you're 'home.' Or the family members who want you to do their errands because you are available. While there is nothing wrong with these activities, when they take you away from the time allotted to your business they become distractions.
3) Making a Distinction: The lines can get blurred very easily but it's very important for the sake of good self-management to keep your work and your personal life separate.
Once you decide that you have the personality that will be satisfied with a work-at-home environment, work hard to avoid allowing the disadvantages take away the pleasure from your decision. Keep in mind that this is a well-traveled road so find books and online sources that offer suggestions and possible solutions to whatever obstacles you may come up against. Learn to manage not just your time, but yourself so that you will learn to set a schedule and stick to it, set-up your systems, and don't forget to schedule personal and family time as well.
