Working In The Travel Industry
For someone who enjoys the excitement of International travel and has experienced
different countries and cultures, then maybe a career or job role within the travel industry could be a good opportunity.
There are many positions available which require different skills and qualifications. If you have studied travel and tourism as part of your education, you may be aware of the many opportunities available.
The position of cabin crew, working for a major airline is an exciting prospect to many and a great way to see the world. However, it requires periods away from home, can be very tiring and is not always as glamorous as one might expect. There are also other positions such as check in staff, ticketing and fairs, car hire and foreign exchange which are all available within the UK airports.
Certain large travel agents consider it a bonus if you are well travelled. What better person can advise potential travellers than someone who can give a true opinion and advise on the countries and resorts they have visited.
You could also consider working for a cruise company, once again it may be in reservations or you may prefer to be part of the crew. There are many job roles on offer here, ranging from dancers and musicians to kitchen staff, hairdressers, fitness coaches and waiting staff to name a few.
Many of the tour operators have call centres situated nationally throughout the UK and they are regularly looking for employees to promote holidays, flights and car hire on both a pro active and re active basis.
Working in the marketing department of a tour operator can be very exciting. I was recently talking to a marketing manager of a large operator who had the most wonderful job, travelling the world reviewing five star rated hotels.
You could also consider a Job working for your local tourist board. Tourist guides are an essential part of the tourism industry. If you live in a place or city of interest such as London, York, Edinburgh, Brighton to name but a few then you could conduct organised tours for groups of tourists, visiting heritage sites and local attractions. You may need specialist knowledge of subjects such as history, art and architecture. There are often opportunities through your local authorities or the national trust.
There are several internet Job Boards and Job sites offering vacancies within the travel and tourism sector.
