I recently received a phone call from my oldest daughters algebra teacher.
Apparently, the teacher was just as shocked as I was that my daughter, a
middle-schooler in a very selective gifted and talented program and a
straight-A student, had earned a 71 on an algebra quiz. When I discussed the
matter with my daughter, it turned out that she had been struggling with one
of the math concepts but was afraid to ask the teacher for clarification
because everyone thinks Im so smart. What would they think of me if
they knew I had to ask for help?
Many of us make our lives more complicated by refusing to ask for help. We
delude ourselves into thinking that asking for help is a weakness, or justify
our overloaded schedules by claiming that we have to do it all - no one can
do it as well as we can. Delegating takes too much time. If you want to get
a job done right, do it yourself. If I ask the senior partner a question,
shell think I dont know what Im doing. Sound familiar?
We live in a culture where everyone seems to be overloaded. In some circles,
particularly large law firms, its a badge of honor to be stretched beyond
reason. But if you are truly committed to finding work/life balance (rather
than just complaining about it), start by looking at yourself instead of your
outside responsibilities. Consider the possibility that you are burying
yourself needlessly. Look around you and you will find plenty of people to
help, people who want to use their gifts and talents so you can use yours.
Delegate. Outsource. Ask for help. Trust others to do their best. Get
back to doing the work (and the play) you love.
How might your life improve if you were willing to let go a little? What
could you do, or be, if you had just a little more time and a little less
stress? Take it one step further and think about the benefits to your
clients and your firm of using resources more efficiently.
Many high achievers sabotage themselves by thinking they have to do it all.
Dont be one of them. It might take some time to get comfortable with the
idea of asking for help, so start developing the habit now before another
time crunch comes along. The next time youre feeling overloaded, ask for
help and share the load with someone else. And maybe youll get an A
next time. My daughter did.
