Working With Tefl Jobs Abroad

Before I started at the university I planned on becoming one of those teachers who travels around the world

. My plans came to a halt when a teaching position in my hometown opened up and my mother encouraged me to apply for it. I was both stunned and heartbroken when I got the job. I liked the idea of earning a living, but I hated giving up my dream to travel. When I fell in love and married my husband, I really thought my dream had come to an end.

When my school ran out of money, I talked things over with my husband and we came to a decision. I was going to get my certification to teach ESL, which would make it possible for me to qualify for TEFL jobs abroad. If I liked it great, we would come up with a way to make it work. If I hated it, wed pursue the possibility of getting another job closer to home.

I have fallen head over heels in love with TEFL jobs abroad. As much as I enjoy having the opportunity to live and work in different countries, right now I stick to short term assignments because I want to see as much of the world as I can. The most rewarding part of TEFL jobs abroad is the children. In my old job most of my students were kind of sulky and not really all that interested in learning, but my experiences at the international schools has been quite different. Im working with younger students, so that might be part of it, but nearly all of them seem to be really motivated and they all seem to enjoy coming to school. Working with students who share my excitement for learning is a real treat. It makes going to work each day fun!

Ill admit that Im lucky. I never had children of my own so I didnt have to worry about them, and my husband is a journalist. The hometown paper he wrote for wasnt interested in keeping him on staff while he followed me to my various Tefl certification programs, but he has been able to get some really high paying gigs as a travel writer. Teaching English in foreign countries is always an adventure. After spending a lot of time regretting the missed opportunity to travel, TEFL makes it possible to teach and travel at the same time.
