Working overtime may be good for Wealth, but Bad for Heart

Experts said that the findings highlighted the importance of work life balance. Working overtime may be good for your wealth but bad for your health, especially your heart.

The European Heart Journal had published the Whitehall study II, which consist of the results of the long run study of more than 10,000 civil servants in London (UK).

The study has founded that, there is 60% higher risk of heart diseases, the heart related problems like myocardial infarction, angina, heart blocks, and other non fatal heart diseases, in the people who work for more than seven hours a day, three or more hours longer than the normal working hours.

Men who were married were found to work nine times more overtime than the single workers. And men were six times more likely to work overtime than women.

A lot of latitude is seen in making work decisions in about 64%, whereas in 13% there is little latitude.The association between working for long hours and coronary heart disease is now been included in the list of the well known risk factors, like smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, said by the senior researcher, Dr. Mariana Virtanen, an epidemiologist of the Finish Institute of Occupational Health, Helsinki (Finland) ND University college London(UK).

The type A behavior like, aggression, hostility, competitiveness, psychological distress, and sleep problems was associated with the white collar civil servants was seen in the study as observed by the researcher, Dr. Mariana Virtanen.

More research and health outcomes are needed to tell confidently the relation between working overtime and coronary heart disease, like depression and Type II diabetes.
