A heartless odd job man has been jailed for conning an elderly lady out of thousands of pounds, to pay for shoddy work that he carried out on her home, that would have totalled less than two thousand pound to complete should she have used a reputable company.

Phillip Lepetit took over forty thousand pounds from the elderly lady, after hearing that she had inherited over two hundred and fifty thousand pounds from her brother. The wealthy lady did not really understand the cost of what she was having done, and believed that she had consulted with a trustworthy source to help her on the repairs she needed in her home.

The case came to light when Natwest bank became suspicious when the lady wished to draw a further twenty thousand pounds from her savings, and they visited her home. After seeing the work that had been carried out and realising the lady had been duped, they called the police, who looked into it. Mr Lepetit was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

The judge presiding over the case said: "Ms Melville was an elderly lady, some 80 years of age, and told you she had received an inheritance. She had little understanding of the real value of money and you took advantage of her."

After the sentence, DC Bernadette Ellison said: "He is a despicable and odious man who never once showed any remorse for his actions. Ms Melville's family are very pleased with the sentence, as am I.

The family have offered thanks to the diligence of staff members at the bank, as without them, Mr Lepetit would have bled the victim dry.
