Staff wellness needs to be on the radar for any boss because its a fundamental ingredient that impacts productivity and profits. It is as crucial as the accounting department, the marketing department, and the sales department. Why? It is the people in those departments that drive those departments.
If your people are not well, those departments are not well. It is its own category and it needs to be nurtured. So why do some management, bosses, and leaders not address it?
A common issue with management is that they sometimes can only see wellness as a cost without benefit. Theyve got short-term targets and theyre looking for an immediate return on any expenditure to justify said cost. Yet, with wellness the damage is going to come in the long-term, not in the short-term, likewise the results. Thats because people can tolerate discomfort and do in workplaces all over the world, not just Australia. However there comes a point when their tolerance is pushed too far and theyll need to take action. Perhaps theyll quit, perhaps theyll have an outrageous meltdown, or perhaps theyll do something that unbalances the workplace.
If you as a manager, a boss or a leader are able to look ahead of your short-term targets and goals to consider the longer term, then Wellness needs to feature in your plans.
The unfortunate next issue is that some management and leaders dont have the skills or the knowledge on how to implement wellness in the long (or short) term. Theyve got the intent, but they dont know how to action it. Many managers weve spoken to can confidently say that they know how to impact the marketing department, or how to impact the sales department. However, when it comes to wellness its beyond their knowledge or experience.
What if they do get the intellect and they do get the knowledge? The next issue is: Is it inside the managements jurisdiction?
When it comes to health, this area can be a bit grey. Heres an easy distinction to use for your workplace: If someones health only impacts them, then its personal. But if it impacts the community theyre in, then it becomes a community issue, which management can have an influence over, an impact. Also consider the fact that staff can be in the workplace for eight hours a day. Some people are in their workplace more than they are at their own home, so youve absolutely got jurisdiction as a manager to be involved in their health & wellness.
Having highlighted the key issues, we now get to a point where a manager can have a long-term plan; can be starting to get the intellect; can be getting the knowledge available to them; and is aware its within their jurisdiction; what happens next?
Now it comes down to an integrity issue. You either care about your people or you care about your short-term targets.
Theres going to be a conflict and many will opt to focus on the short-term targets and goals, which is fine, in the short-term. Beware, not considering, caring or planning for your staff wellness will result in staff burnout, fatigue, turnover and ultimately corporate intellectual bleed.
Opting to look after your people, over a long period of time should result in momentum. Increased growth, increased morale, reduced staff turnover and all the positive elements that come together in a successful team.
Wellness shouldnt be considered a fluffy word anymore. Wellness is something that an educated manager, boss, or business leader can deliberately manage and build to be a significant department of their organisation.
