Workplace Harassment - What Kind Of Bully Is Your Manager?

Workplace harassment is an oppressive thing to have to face day in and day out

. If you want to end workplace bullying then your first step is going to be properly identifying the bullying behavior.

There is no better way to deal with an abusive boss than to logically and methodically point out the behavior that you consider abusive and why.

So the first thing you have to do is make a list of all the things that your boss does that you feel is abusive. More importantly, you need to be able to point out how other workers in the office environment are NOT being subjected to the same behavior.

What showing the difference in behavior toward the other employees and you will do, is it will make it stand out that the treatment you receive is harsh and unfair. By showing that you are able to clearly demonstrate the difference in treatment between your co-workers and you, you demonstrate to your boss that you have more than enough to take them to court, and this in turn could cause them to back down.

Now, there are different classes of abusive bosses and you have to learn how to recognize each one.

Here is the list of types:

The Critic- These are the bosses who use insults and put-downs to make you feel small.

The Two Face- The manager who is two faced can be very challenging at times. They tell everyone one thing, and you something entirely different - often leaving you very confused.

The Micro Manager- This is the boss that has to have their finger in absolutely everything that you do, managing and controlling you every single step of the way. It's tiring, and can wear you out fast.

The Screaming Missiles These are the ones who are just totally out of control and often seem irrational.

Because the traits and personalities that drive each of these types of bosses/bullies are different, there are different ways of handling each type.

When dealing with the critical manager, one of the best things to do is explain to them how their critical stance with you will not get the job done.

Dealing with the two-faced boss can be as simple as letting him know what you have heard. When you do this, it is imperative that you do not implicate anyone else, but simply let him know that what he says to others is not being missed by you.

Dealing with the gatekeeper can be a bit challenging in that, the only way you are going to get them to back down is by showing them how when you do it without them constantly looking over your shoulder, you get better results. This one takes a lot of inner strength because you can in no way back down.

If your boss is a screamer, then this one is to be handled with velvet gloves. The unpredictability and sometimes volatile behavior can lead to irrational moves, some of which may affect you adversely. It is not impossible, though.

If you are the point where you feel you will burst if you do not confront your boss, be sure that you identify what type of abusive personality they have before you do so. This will help you to better able take a potentially hostile situation, and turn it around.
